“Could exposure and inhaling carbon black nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes found in the tire crumb used on artificial turf fields be as harmful as breathing asbestos?” In the June/July 2011 issue of the Turfgrass Producers International’s e-newsletter, editor Jim Novak detailed the concerns of research scientists, health care organizations and medical professionals who warn that exposure to carbon black nanoparticles and nanotubes found in the crumb rubber of pulverized tires may harm both the lungs and the brain. Also, they say that inhaling the man-made carbon nanotubes used to strengthen tires may be as harmful as breathing asbestos.
